For 28 years, I was the nurse that handed the doctor the instruments during surgery. Yes, I’ve seen and touched all the organs, and no, I don’t get sick at the sight of blood. There - we got the two most common questions out of the way.
One of the great things about working in surgery is that you can only work on one patient at a time; there are systems, procedures, and plans for every move you make and potential occurrence. It is very intense at times and very routine at times, but we always had a plan of action. In addition, the environment built a great sense of teamwork.
When I finished work and went home to my children, my life was anything but routine and organized. And teamwork? What was that? How could working in surgery seem more natural than raising my own children?
I then realized it was my lack of training. I was able to handle the tough spots in surgery, because I had proper training. Where was my training for parenthood? No wonder I was so frustrated!
I set out to educate myself in parenting, so the next 13 years were filled with counseling, seminars, CDs, books, home courses - you name it. I was going to do all I could to give my kids the opportunity to reach their highest potential, and I refused to go crazy while doing so!
I knew from my work in surgery that when everyone has a plan, utilizes their strengths, and works as a team, a lot gets accomplished. When each person’s unique talents are cherished, the team flourishes.
So, I took what I knew and made a system out of it. When I had a plan to help with the really difficult times, the less-intense times became a breeze. In fact, when I became consistent with these tools, they removed my panic about my kids completely.
The system evolved to include tools for numerous situations, as more and more families started implementing these systems. As situations would arise, we would utilize our basic principles and fine-tune where needed. We found that the more consistent and calm we were, the more success we had, and the happier we became!
I started seeing parents feel empowered and confident, and they knew what they were doing felt right for them! I’m so happy that now I get the opportunity to help many parents and families do the same.
My message is that good, strong families are more than possible, and I can help!
